During the corona crisis, I set up a project with the SAETA institute that dealt with the sounds of the city during the corona crisis. Specifically, during so-called curfews. We are living in strange times. Our social circles are reduced to predictable contacts. Night-time socialising is limited to the circles of people closest to each other and restricted to the confines of the four walls. But the nights can sound similar as they did a hundred years ago because there is much less people outside than there were, say, a year ago. I am interested in what that sounded like. During the period of restricted night-time movement, I recorded the sounds of a few interesting locations. The first was the Stožice football stadium in Ljubljana during the match between Slovenia and Azerbaijan, which was played in front of empty stands. The pounding of the ball and the calls reminiscent of battle commands are distinctly heard. The reverberations are amazing. I thank the Football Association of Slovenia for allowing me to record legally (youtu.be/IjvRo9iN5WQ). Next, I tackled the sound of the Tivoli park, the Ljubljana city centre at the Prešeren Monument, the castle, the train station, and other empty streets. I finished on a foggy morning at Špica Park, where swans suddenly flew in; their wings flapping sounded like skateboarding enthusiasts skating around me.

Interestingly, the city did not go completely silent. My microphone particularly detected low tones, as if some large body were humming in the distance, waiting for the opportunity to get up and start moving. In this relative silence, the mighty sounds of trains and helicopters stood out. Bicycles, small motorcycles, scooters and the occasional pedestrian all seemed like sonic illusions. The Ljubljanica River was almost bubbling.

On the first day, I started recording at around 8 pm, an hour before the the prohibition of movement went into effect. The last day, however, I recorded at around 7 in the morning, an hour after prohibition of movement ended.
